Trails.scot is a teacher resource developed by the Data Education in Schools team at the University of Edinburgh in partnership with the Scottish government. It has been created for teachers in Scotland, however is also an excellent resource for teachers in England who are interested in the potential of AI in schools.
This project contains a variety of informative resources for teachers. These are tied to the Scottish ‘Curriculum for Excellence’ curriculum framework, so will not match an English curriculum, but the broad principles of learning and teaching AI literacy are very clearly described and are relevant to all teachers who believe that children have a right to be educated about AI and their digital future.
The Teach AI Literacy Handbook is aimed at primary and secondary teachers who want to teach their students about how AI works and how to use AI responsibly to support their learning. click here for this excellent Handbook. It does not deal directly with art and design education, but art and design teachers will find it very helpful as they seek to untangle the issues in our subject.
Recently published Department for Education (England) AI Guidance places an emphasis on protecting children from AI, rather than recognising an obligation to ensure children are able to use it appropriately and safely. These materials from Scotland are refreshing, clearly written and encouraging to those of us who believe AI should be part of education rather than simply a means to save teachers’ time in carrying out mundane administration tasks.
