Subject specific training for art teachers is hard to find, and to fund. But there are opportunities to learn and share still.
Thinking allowed:
- These days, CPD is usually school-specific and generic. How can art teachers ensure that the particular issues for art teaching are addressed?
- How is art and design teaching different from teaching in other subject areas?
- What are the best sources of subject specific advice and guidance for art teachers?
- How relevant is historic guidance and advice for art teachers today?

NSEAD provides members with support in various ways. It provides access to groups which meet regularly and to digital groups such as facebook. NSEAD members have access to a vast online resource of articles from journals, such as iJade, and newsletters. It also provides a website which maps all aspects of curriculum building called The Big Landscape. The Oak National Academy also provides access to a free online range of curriculum resources in all subjects.
It is typical of online communities that they are in a constant state of flux so members will also need to conduct their own research to find resources to meet their needs.
The most useful and relevant source of advice, encouragement and debate is probably found within the external assessment system provided by the Awarding bodies.
Facebook online communities are unsatisfactory in providing serious professional debate and support. Responses are usually casual and brief, and the writer’s expertise and experience are unknown.
Those members with an interest in AI will find a plethora of online articles and websites devoted to this subject which will be discoverable via Google. They will also be aware that with appropriate prompts, AI programmes such as Claude and ChatGPT will be able to provide useful responses to many questions.
